Lighting design for Hotel Unique, Sao Paulo

Light installation for Hotel Unique in Brazil
Sao Paulo, 2016
Ingo Maurer and his team supplemented the hotel equipment and hotel design of the Brazilian hotel with a light installation in the hotel lobby and the hotel bar. The Munich lighting designers arranged five lamps of the product "Flying Disk" by Ingo Maurer above the lobby and bar of the Hotel Unique in Sao Paulo. The existing hotel space and thus the hotel interior were upgraded with the individual lighting concept. The layout guides the eyes of the visitors from the seating area in the center of the lobby to the bar at the end of the space, creating curiosity and the wish to explore. With the fully glare-free light, guests at the bar or in the seating area relax and enjoy the stunning architecture. During installation, Ingo Maurer was present at Hotel Unique and directed the placement of the five light objects.
Flying Disc is extremely light-weight object for indirect lighting. Attached with thin wires, it seems to hover below the ceiling. Suspended from only three wires, it is meant to be installed with a certain angle, to add dynamics to the space. The thin white disc is lit up by a ring of high quality LEDs, diffusing the light. A long slender black rod made of carbon fiber holds the LED ring below the disc. Both length of the rod and the angle of the ring are adjustable, so that it is possible to light up the diffuser disc asymmetrically. All three parts, the disc, the rod and the ring visually merge to an intriguing graphical object.
